This has nothing to do with information technology but I needed some place to vent and apparently Newsweek, in its death throes, does not have a commenting engine anymore.
Some lefty Journolister named Howard Fineman, in talking about Republican vs. Democrat party positions on the intrusiveness vs. non-intrusiveness of the US federal government says this about the Republicans:
"They are shouting “NO!” as loudly as they can, even as they rely on their Social Security and their Medicare, on their Interstates and tax cuts and credits, on student loans and weather satellites and air-traffic-control-systems and research earmarks."
I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican but I am sick of these left wingers equating Social Security and Medicare with federal largesse. I paid in over $200,000 over 40 years of work and will only get it back -- without interest -- if I live to over 80.
As for the Interstate highway system, it was built with a gas tax. I easily paid $50,000 over the years in gas tax. Not to mention the fact that the Democrats changed the rules somewhere along the line and let states charge tolls to drive down roads that the gas tax paid for.
I am afraid it's the dependency people that rely on federally subsidized student loans, not the independent people. I assume air traffic control is funded by the landing and takeoff fees tacked on to tickets but not sure about that.
In other words, Howard Fineman -- whomever he is -- doesn't know the first thing about real people or how the government works.
