It's a bitch to get old! I realize it in different ways. Attending my grandson's 10th birthday was a sign but attending my child's 40th birthday was even worse. Huffing and puffing when I turn the corner past Howes Beach and start walking back west toward the Village against the wind in the middle of January sends a warning. Only filling the wheelbarrow half way before moving it, while working in the garden, is telltale.
But I don't expect warning signs while working my way through my inbox.
Sally Khudairi of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) writes January 12 to tell the community that
"Facebook joins ASF Platinum Sponsors Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), and Yahoo! (YHOO); Gold Sponsor Hewlett-Packard (HP); Silver Sponsors Progress Software (PRGS) and Springsource/VMWare (VMW); and Bronze Sponsors BlueNog, Intuit (INTU), Joost, and Matt Mullenweg."
It's really a great to see the way the ASF is growing and broadening its role in the industry. It has acted as a strong rallying point since I first interviewed Jim Jagielski three years ago, during a time when there were a lot of open source participants -- not in the ASF -- calling Microsoft a bunch of Nazis or worse. Its sponsor lineup looks like the who's who of 21st century IT (not sure why IBM is not an official sponsor but it has certainly been a major mover and shaker in ASF history).
And I can buy and sell shares in almost everyone on the list. Those not yet public are strong IPO candidates.
But wait. Who is Matt Mullenweg? The answer:
"... the founding developer of WordPress, one of PC World’s Top 50 People on the Web, Inc.com’s 30 under 30, and Business Week’s 25 Most Influential People on the Web."
Boy, does that make me feel old.
